Theatreland: Backstage Stories

Thursday 26 April | 18.45-20.00 | Covent Garden

Covent Garden is bursting with scandalous and fascinating behind-the-scenes stories. On this tour we’ll traverse the cobbled streets and discover the rich architectural, political, and theatrical history it has to offer. We’ll kick off with Inigo Jones’ ‘Actors Church’, famed for Punch and Judy and My Fair Lady, where actors have been baptised and buried for centuries. We’ll make our way to the Royal Opera, Theatre Royal and Lyceum, learning how this area magically transformed across the 17th and 18th centuries from London slum to internationally renowned Theatreland. Some of theatre’s most intriguing characters include David Garrick, William Hogarth, and Nell Gwyn, an original pin-up girl, actress and courtesan to King Charles II! This not-so-humble abode of thespians, musicians and writers alike has such a glittering history, you’ll leave this tour dancing in the street!

A huge thanks from us for helping make last night’s event so special. We are getting such positive feedback from all of the clients – some of the most glowing I’ve ever received. I was really impressed with everything you guys did so please pass on my thanks to your team as well for making it such a success.

My son Charlie and I were taken round the National Gallery by Rose Balston, and in three brief hours, we were inspired to levels of wonder. Rose has the gift of allowing you to discover things in the paintings that you would never have noticed before…I’d strongly recommend you join an Art History UK tour.
