Before arriving in Dubai Rose was repeatedly told she was going to a cultural desert. In fact, with a nudge in the right direction, you’ll find Dubai to be culturally vibrant with pockets that burst with character and charm.

With an ancient heritage, the astonishing evolution of the city – from a tiny fishing village to a vast globally powerful metropolis – is well worth studying. This is best understood in Dubai’s delightful old town – the Creek area, the gold and spice souk, the pearl museum and the Iranian inspired Bastakiya area.

Dubai is on the cutting edge of the contemporary art world, forefronted by the hugely successful Art Dubai art fair (held every year in March), and the radical Al Serkal Avenue, stuffed to the brim with globally recognised modern and contemporary art galleries, performance art spaces and an array of events, talks and films.

Fervent cultural activity is bubbling away round the corner in Abu Dhabi. Not only are there architectural wonders studding the landscape (showcasing Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Richard Rogers and others), but in 2017 the Louvre Abu Dhabi will open its doors to display a rich collection of art from across the globe.

With so many cultural sites to choose from, Rose is able to provide a variety of tours. As with all of Rose’s programmes, she offers special access to give a richer understanding of Dubai’s art scene and cultural tradition. She can introduce groups to gallerists and directors, visit artists in their studios to understand what makes them tick and give behind-the-scenes access to the art fairs and museums.

Our Client's Say

My son Charlie and I were taken round the National Gallery by Rose Balston, and in three brief hours, we were inspired to levels of wonder. Rose has the gift of allowing you to discover things in the paintings that you would never have noticed before. Mark Hedges, Editor, Country Life

Small groups, passionate guides, enlightening conversations: these are the three ingredients that go into making Art History UK such a treat…it is not about lectures and seminars (though it is deeply educating): the focus is on bringing London’s treasures – the galleries and the museums – to life. And Rose’s knowledge is unquestionable. Balston has a soft spot for anything by the architects Nicholas Hawksmoor and John Soane, and the National Gallery is her second home. Condé Nast Traveller

Anyone present at one of Rose's lectures is transported to the era of the art she explores. She has an infectious passion for her subject, and with a remarkable ability to relate to her audience, she helps make the past immediate and relevant. This arises from a potent combination of a great depth of knowledge gleaned from rigorous research, and abundant natural charisma. Benjamin Walton, Head of History of Art, Westminster School for Boys, London

Professional, incredibly knowledgeable, imaginative and above all fun! I can't recommend Rose enough. She is a joy to work with and all her clients love her from students to CEOs. Her company is innovative and a breath of fresh air. Emma Rance, Director, Plum PA

Art History UK is a gift to the cultural Philistine. With such a broad range of tours on offer, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Rose Balston is the best tour guide I have ever encountered- interesting, inspiring, passionate about her subject, and extremely well-versed in the history of art and architecture of London; the perfect Cicerone. Ed Glass, Senior Associate at Korn Ferry

We have held several client evenings with Rose at the National Gallery and Royal Academy and they have been among our most successful events (and we put on a huge variety). I cannot recommend her highly enough. If you have discerning clients who love fine art, Rose is a must. Philip Whalley, Director, CLSA

I hugely enjoyed myself last night. Such a nice change from the usual event and I thought it attracted a more highbrow client! Thank you very much. Citi client event at Leighton House, London

You seemed to effortlessly combine historical fact, the history of the collection with your detailed art historian’s eye. You spoke with passion and fluidity and your enthusiasm was infectious … I know we were all enthralled! Ali Huntrods, Parents events at the King’s School Canterbury.

These are not your conventional art history lectures; engaging, fun and sociable with astounding expertise and plenty of knowledge to take away - they're bound to leave you inspired. The tours are a fantastic way to discovery and re-discovery London. Art nut or novice I urge you to go! Moya Stirrup, Culture Whisper
